Free Checklist

Is Your Crypto Ready
for Your Heirs?

68% of crypto holders have no inheritance plan. $140 billion in crypto is estimated to be permanently lost — not hacked, not stolen. Just inaccessible after death.

Use this 12-point checklist to close the gaps before it's too late. No signup required.

Documentation

List every wallet you own

Hardware wallets, software wallets, exchange accounts, DeFi protocols.

Record each wallet's seed phrase in a secure physical location

Not on your phone. Not in iCloud. On paper or steel, in a safe.

Write down approximate balances by asset

Heirs need to know what they're looking for.

Access & Recovery

Confirm you can recover every wallet from seed phrase alone

Test it. Many people discover problems here.

Store at least one seed phrase backup offsite

Safe deposit box, trusted family member's home, or a fireproof safe.

Document your hardware wallet PIN(s)

Without the PIN, even the device is locked. Store separately from the seed phrase.

Heir Planning

Designate at least one heir who will receive crypto access

Name the person specifically, not just 'my estate'.

Tell your heir that the asset exists (not where the key is — just that it exists)

Heirs who don't know to look won't look.

Create a 'crypto letter' to include with your will

Instructions your executor can follow. Do not include keys in the letter itself.

Automation & Failsafes

Set up a dead man's switch mechanism

Something that triggers delivery if you stop responding — email-based or a dedicated tool like VaultPass.

Choose a trusted person to hold one shard of your access key

Shamir's Secret Sharing requires 2-of-3 to unlock. One person alone can't access it — and one person's death doesn't destroy it.

Update your plan after any major life change

New wallet, new heir, new relationship, new jurisdiction. Set a calendar reminder to review annually.

“Most people complete 3–4 of these. The hardest part is #10 — the dead man's switch. It's the only item on this list that works when you can't.”

Automate Items 9–12

VaultPass handles the dead man's switch for you.
